Are bluebell shoots really worth it?

If you’ve been thinking about booking bluebell photos this year, you’re not alone. Every spring, I have messages from families saying the same thing. They’ve seen the photos, they love the idea, but they’re not quite sure whether to go for it. Maybe it feels like a luxury. Maybe you’re wondering if your children will actually cooperate. Maybe you’re worried about getting the timing right. So before you decide, here’s what I always tell my clients.

1. Bluebells don’t last long

Bluebell season is incredibly short. In most years, it lasts around two to three weeks, and even that depends on the weather. A few warm days can bring them out quickly, and heavy rain can flatten them just as fast. This means there’s a very small window where everything aligns — the flowers, the light, and the overall feel. Once it’s gone, it’s gone until next year.

2. Your children don’t need to “behave”

This is probably the biggest worry I hear. But the truth is, bluebell sessions are not about perfectly posed photos. They’re about movement, connection, and letting your children be themselves. Toddlers don’t need to sit still. They don’t need to smile on command. Some of the most beautiful images come from the in-between moments — a child wandering through the flowers, a quick cuddle, a laugh you didn’t expect.

3. It’s less about the flowers, more about the feeling

Yes, the bluebells are beautiful. But what people fall in love with afterwards isn’t just the setting. It’s the feeling of the images. Soft light, warm tones, a slightly nostalgic atmosphere.

Photos that feel like a memory rather than something staged. That’s what makes them so special.

4. Most people nearly don’t book

Almost every family I photograph says some version of this: “We nearly didn’t do it.” Life is busy. There’s always something else to prioritise. It can feel like something to put off until “next year”. But the truth is, next year comes around quickly - and everything looks a little different. The children are older. The phase you’re in has passed.

5. You’ll never regret having the photos

I have never had a client say they regret booking a bluebell session. But I do hear from people who missed it and wish they hadn’t. Photos like these quietly become part of your family history. They’re the ones you come back to, print, and keep.

📍 Bluebell Photoshoots in Hertfordshire

I photograph bluebell sessions across Hertfordshire, including areas around Hertford, St Albans, Ware and Welwyn Garden City. Each session is relaxed, natural, and focused on capturing your family as you are — not forcing anything that doesn’t feel right.

Are bluebell photoshoots worth it?

If you’re asking the question, you probably already know the answer. They’re not just about having photos taken. They’re about capturing a fleeting season, in a way that feels honest and lasting. And because the window is so short, they tend to become some of the most treasured images families have.

If bluebell photos have been on your mind this year, this is your sign to go for it. Dates are limited due to the short season, and once they’re gone, they won’t be repeated until next spring.
